Hybrid Solar Eclipse

20. April 2023 in Indonesia, Australia, Papua New Guinea

A hybrid Solar Eclipse takes place on April 20, 2023. It can be seen from Indonesia, Australia and Papua New Guinea. It is an eclipse, with portions of its path near sunrise and sunset as annular. A hybrid eclipse (also called annular/total eclipse) shifts between a total and annular eclipse. At certain points on the surface of Earth it appears as a total eclipse, whereas at other points it appears as annular. Hybrid eclipses are comparatively rare.

The eclipse is a part of Saros cycle 129, repeating every 18 years, 11 days, containing 80 events. The series started with partial solar eclipse on October 3, 1103. It contains annular eclipses on May 6, 1464 through March 18, 1969, hybrid eclipses on April 8, 2005 and April 20, 2023 and total eclipses from April 30, 2041 through July 26, 2185.

Total solar eclipses are rare events. Although they occur somewhere on Earth every 18 months on average, it is estimated that they recur at any given place only once every 360 to 410 years, on average. The total eclipse lasts for only a maximum of a few minutes at any location, because the Moon's umbra moves eastward at over 1700 km/h. Totality currently can never last more than 7 min 32 s. This value changes over the millennia and is currently decreasing. (With material from: Wikipedia)
